During Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference opening keynote, which took place earlier this month, Vice President of iOS Software Scott Forstall unveiled a new app called “Passbook” that allows customers to track a number of various types of livepage.apple.comstubs, including boarding passes, loyalty cards, movie tickets, and coupons. The app is included in the iOS 6 preview currently available to developers a part of Apple’s developer program, but it is missing those virtual items to put inside. For now, it is just a sitting page with no functionality. However, Passbook will most likely swing into full gear as Apple makes more additions heading into this fall. For those of you itching to start using Passbook, you can get it going in iOS 6 with just a few simple steps:
Redmond Pie showed us how to get it going. It all relies on a new website now in alpha, called “PassSource”, which allows you to create iOS Passbook passes for free. On the mobile webpage, you can make boarding passes, coupons, events, store cards, and more. It is really intuitive.
First, open the PassSource.com website on your iOS 6-enabled device, and then select which type of pass you would like to create.
Fill in the pass with the correct information, like the card number and member name.
Press create.
It will then open inside of the Passbook app, which will make the app completely usable!
We reported yesterday that prototypes of the next iPhone include an NFC chip, which could eventually make Passbook an awesome Google Wallet alternative if it ever gets a payment processor like Citibank’s PayPass system for credit card transactions. We should see more support out of Apple in the coming months for Passbook.
