Apple Reportedly Working on 4K "Ultra HD" iTV for Late 2013 Release?

After months of "iWatch" rumors burying the long standing iTV rumors, there back, again.  While many assumed that an Apple iTV was dead, the rumor hasn't died yet and is back on the tech industries radar once again.

Digitimes is reporting that an unnamed source from the supply chain has confirmed this report that Apple is in fact working on an "Ultra HD" TV that would carry a resolution of 3840 x 2160. Even better yet, the ever reliable Digitimes is also reporting that the rumored iTV will be an internet ready device that will take advantage of voice and motion technologies with a projected release date of late 2013, early 2014.

"The sources said that Apple and Foxconn Electronics have been in discussions for quite some time in terms of the TV's mass production schedule, but that Apple has been considering where panel supply for the TV will come from, as Ultra HD TV panel makers, most of whom are based in Taiwan, are expected to be producing at nearly full capacity in 2013 in order to meet demand from China-based TV vendors.
Additionally, other panel makers in Apple's supply chain that may have the ability to produce Ultra HD TV panels are expected to allocate most of their panel production to the company's iPhone, iPad and iPad mini products instead, as ultra-mobile devices are expected to be popular in the market during 2013, the sources noted."

Obviously, pricing is a huge issue when talking about a 4K TV. I still doubt the fact that Apple is even working on this. We wrote a piece about a month ago talking about why the AppleTV would be the only product with the name TV in it that Apple will make and I still stand by that post.

You have to be absolutely blind to believe this rumor. The costs alone of production, marketing, and distribution of an "Ultra HD" I think would be too much for Apple to seriously consider making this product. I could be completely wrong, but I have an Apple TV hooked up to a two year old 42' inch, 1080p, 120 Htz HDTV and the picture/interface is beautiful.

Everything is gorgeous using my small, affordable AppleTV and that is Apple's motto. The number one goal for Apple is smaller, thinner, lighter and that is what they have with the Apple TV. Making an iTV is just taking the Apple TV software, UI and throwing it on a larger display that Apple has to create, test, product, distribute, and sell. No! That is not what Apple is going to do.

The Apple TV gives you choice. You chose the TV, you chose when you get a new TV. With the AppleTV they have now, anyone can afford it. The AppleTV gives people an affordable way to enhance their TV and gives Apple even more devices connected to iTunes with means more money. More people, more money. With an Apple TV, you are limited to when Apple updates their TV's and the sizes that Apple deems the right size. Each home is different. Apple can't make a TV that adequately fits the needs of the consumer to make this a viable product.
