Mockups of a 4.94-Inch iPhone surface? An Apple Phablet?

Amid the swirling rumors of a larger iPhone code named "iPhone Math," Instapaper creator Marco Arment has graciously given us a mock-up of what a larger iPhone would look like sitting right next to the latest and greatest Samsung smartphones. These mock-ups are to demonstrate how Apple could move to a larger and wider screen without compromising the screen resolution Apple has stuck by all of these years.
Mock up of rumored iPhone Plus next to iPhone 5, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2.

"The recently rumored, larger-screened "iPhone Math", or more likely "iPhone Plus", is plausible as an additional model (not a replacement) alongside the 4" iPhone. And there's a good chance that it would have a 4.94", 16:9 screen.

The theory is easy to understand: perform John Gruber's Mini-predicting math backwards. The iPad Mini uses iPhone 3GS-density screens at iPad resolution. What if an iPhone Plus used Retina iPad screens with iPhone 5 resolution, keeping the rest of the design sized like an iPhone 5?"

In the hypothetical world described by Arment, an 1136x640 screen would match the iPhone 5's resolution but with a screen blown up to the Retina iPad's 264 PPI resolution would measure around 4.94 inches diagonally.

I do believe that there is some truth to all of these mock ups and rumors of a larger iPhone. The question isn't if Apple will release an iPhone with a larger screen size, it is when will Apple release a larger iPhone with a larger screen size.

Apple is under a lot of fire from the press and consumers alike that were unsatisfied with a "taller iPhone" instead of a larger one with the release of the iPhone 5. So seeing rumors like this I believe are hints that in the near future, we very well might see a "phablet" in the next year or two.

While the iPhone 5 is an amazing device and perfect for many consumers, there is a large group of consumers making the switch from Apple to other companies not only because Android is quickly becoming a great mobile OS, but because those phones have large displays.

So what do you think of these rumors? Do you think Apple will release a larger iPhone in the near future, "iPhone Phablet"? Or do you think these rumors are completely fake with no stock in them at all? Let us know on our Facebook Page or on our new Forum. Head on over and start a conversation with fellow Apple fans and the crew from Guessing the Apple. Peace Apple Nation!
