Maps on iOS 6, Does It Suck?

iOS 6, which was released yesterday, brought several flagship features to the iOS Device family. Among those highly anticipated features was Apple's own Map app with built in Turn-by-Turn directions. Because the relationship between Apple and Google has been at best, complicated, Apple decided to sever ties with Google Maps on iOS leaving a void for Apple to fill.

Since the debut of Maps on iOS 6 just 24 hours ago, Apple has come under fire with criticism for glitches and lack of features. While Apple began taking fire from unhappy and disgruntled users, Google submitted its Google Maps app to Apple for review and should be admitted into the App Store within a few days. However, Apple is taking the criticism seriously. Apple responded with a public statement saying:

"Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service," said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. "We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better."

According to Apple, the Maps team is "under lockdown" to come up with fixes to the complaints. However, people across the Apple forums are still unsure if Maps will ever reach the level of performance of other similar apps like Google Maps.

I believe Apple's Maps app is good, but not great. I do love the built in Turn by Turn directions with Siri and I also believe that with each iOS 6.X.X update will make the app even better. But Apple still needs several years to build up the information, details, and features that Google and other companies have been doing for several years. So does it suck? Well, kinda compared to Google Maps, but the Turn by Turn navigation with Siri makes it OK.

So what do you think? Do you like Maps as it is right now before any updates? Or do you plan on using Google Maps once it is released until Apple updates its own Maps app to a level that is at or near the level of performance of Google Maps? Let us know in the comment box below or on our Facebook page. Peace Apple Nation!
